Tender advertised for reconstruction of Komani Town Hall
A tender has been advertised for the reconstruction of the Komani Town Hall and municipal offices, more than four years after the historic building was gutted by fire.
Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality has advertised tender SCM06/08/2026 for the appointment of a professional service provider for the reconstruction of the Town Hall and municipal offices.
The move represents a significant step towards restoring the building, which has remained damaged since a devastating fire in January 2022.
According to the tender information, a compulsory briefing session will be held at 20 Brewery Road, Komani, on August 28 at 10am.
Bid documents containing the detailed terms of reference are available from August 27, while the tender is scheduled to close on September 22, 2026.
The advertisement does not, at this stage, mean that a construction contractor has been appointed or that rebuilding work is about to begin. The tender is for the appointment of a professional service provider associated with the reconstruction project.
The development follows years of uncertainty over the future of one of Komani’s most recognisable municipal buildings.
The Town Hall was extensively damaged by fire in January 2022 and has remained out of use since then.
In January this year, Komani News reported on the lack of progress at the building, four years after the fire, and questioned the municipality about what was preventing its reconstruction.
At the time, the municipality indicated that funding remained central to the rebuilding process.
Municipal planning documents have also previously identified the reconstruction of the Town Hall as a project requiring funding.
The latest tender therefore provides the clearest indication in some time that the municipality is moving ahead with the process required for the eventual reconstruction of the building.
However, several stages would still have to be completed before physical reconstruction could begin, including the tender process, evaluation and appointment of the successful professional service provider.
