Severe Thunderstorms and Extreme Fire Risk Alert for Komani Area
SAWS Issues Severe Weather Alerts for Komani
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued dual warnings for the Komani area, alerting residents to severe thunderstorms and extreme fire risk on Friday, 31 October 2025. Both warnings affect the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, including Komani town, Molteno, Tarkastad, and surrounding settlements.
According to SAWS, a deep surface trough combined with upper air disturbances is expected to trigger thunderstorms across the region. These storms may bring moderate to heavy rainfall, strong winds, hail, and excessive lightning, potentially leading to localised flooding and damage to property and roads. Power outages and communication disruptions are also possible, and drivers are warned to exercise caution on flood-affected routes.
Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid contact with metal objects, and refrain from outdoor activities such as fishing or golfing. Vehicles should be parked under cover to reduce the risk of hail damage. While the Level 2 warning indicates minor to low potential impact, the likelihood of thunderstorms occurring is high, making vigilance essential.
Extreme Fire Risk for Komani
At the same time, Komani faces an extreme veld fire warning, with the Fire Danger Index (FDI) expected to exceed 75. Hot, dry, and windy conditions are likely to create runaway fire scenarios, especially in rural and farming areas. Fires may develop and spread rapidly, threatening homes, livestock, and grazing land.
SAWS urges residents not to start any fires under these conditions and to act immediately at the first sign of smoke. Emergency services are on alert, and communities are encouraged to remain vigilant throughout the day.
Preparing for Friday’s Weather
Komani residents are strongly advised to monitor local news and official SAWS updates throughout Friday. Preparations should include securing homes and property, keeping livestock safe, and avoiding travel in hazardous conditions. Both storm-related flooding and extreme fire risks require attention, particularly in low-lying areas and dry grasslands.
The warnings come amid broader volatile weather conditions affecting the Eastern Cape, including the Sarah Baartman, Amathole, and Chris Hani district municipalities, highlighting the need for coordinated community awareness and precaution.
