Protected Tortoise Rescued in Komani After Alleged Attempted Sale
A Leopard Tortoise was recovered in Komani after members of the public intervened when they encountered a man carrying the animal on Saturday morning.
According to those involved in the incident, the man allegedly indicated that he intended to sell the tortoise. He reportedly stated that he had found the animal and was seeking R150 for it.
Concerned about the legality of the situation, the residents approached the individual and informed him that protected wildlife may not be removed from the wild or sold without the necessary permits. When they indicated that they would contact the police, the man handed over the tortoise and left the scene.
No physical altercation occurred.
The tortoise is now expected to be handed over to conservation authorities or a registered nature reserve to ensure it is safely returned to its natural habitat.
Leopard Tortoises are protected under provincial conservation legislation in the Eastern Cape. The removal, possession, sale, or transport of such wildlife without a permit may constitute an offence.
The incident will be reported to the relevant authorities for further investigation.
Residents are reminded that wild animals should not be taken from their natural environment. Anyone who encounters illegal wildlife trade activity is encouraged to contact local law enforcement or conservation officials.
