Mlungisi Residents Protest Sewage, Filth and “Inhumane” Conditions

Mlungisi residents are up in arms over appalling living conditions.

Overflowing sewage, blocked drains, and waste piling up have become the norm, with no end in sight.

Community leaders Vuyolwethu Qaba and Mzimkhulu Ndevu are calling for action, citing inhumane conditions and health risks.

“The situation people are living in is inhumane,” Qaba said, pointing to a blocked canal that once directed water.

The municipality is accused of neglecting the issue, with Qaba slasting corruption as residents suffer. “People can’t eat or stand outside as their yards have sewage overflowing.

Residents of Khayelitsha and Unifound are living in total filth,” he said.

According to the residents, this has been happening for years and nothing is being done to solve the problem.

Qaba said refuse is piling up and properties are being ruined. “There used to be a canal here to direct water, however that has since been closed.

“The situation people are living in is inhumane,” he said

Qaba said the area is always wet as there is sewage that overflows everytime.

“Those who can afford have built walls to try and keep the water out but that alone is not helping. This needs to be fixed,” he said.

He said people are living in bad conditions while the ANC led municipality is spending millions kn corruption.

“People can’t eat or stand outside as their yards have sewage overflowing. Some can’t even use their toilets as there’s water everywhere,” said Qaba.

He said if people are not standing up for their rights, the government will abuse them.

Ndevu echoed the call to action: “We have had enough… This is not good for the health of our children.”

Ndevu said the community needs to standup and fight for their rights.

“We have had enough of this sewage overflows in our streets. Theres a shop next to the overflowing sewage, where children play and buy food. This is not good for the health of our children,” he said

Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality spokesperson Lonwabo Kowa did not respond to the paper by the time of publishing the article.
