MEC Nqatha mourns traffic officer killed in N2 crash near Jeffreys Bay

Eastern Cape MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Xolile Nqatha, has expressed deep sorrow following the death of a female traffic officer who was killed in a crash on the N2 near Jeffreys Bay.

In an official statement issued on Monday, the MEC confirmed the passing of Bertha Beaulah Van Vuuren Fortuin, describing the incident as a tragic loss for both her family and the broader law enforcement community in the province.

The officer died after a head-on collision involving a state vehicle she was driving and a long-distance bus. The incident occurred while she was travelling back to her station after responding to an earlier accident. She was declared dead on the scene, while all occupants of the bus were unharmed.

MEC: “A huge blow” to road safety efforts

Reacting to the incident, Nqatha said the loss of the officer would have a wider impact on ongoing efforts to improve safety on the province’s roads.

“The tragic passing of Van Vuuren Fortuin is a huge blow to the province’s attempts to improve road safety and reduce fatalities in our province,” said MEC Nqatha.

He further extended condolences to those affected by her death.

“On behalf of the Department of Transport, I would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to the grieving family, friends and colleagues of the late officer,” he said.

Loss felt across law enforcement

According to the department, the MEC regards the officer’s passing not only as a personal loss to her loved ones, but also as a loss to the department and law enforcement agencies across the Eastern Cape.

Authorities have confirmed that a case of culpable homicide has been opened at Jeffreys Bay Police Station.
