Komani Resident Raises Alarm Over Louis Rex Conditions

Concerns have been raised about conditions at Louis Rex Primary School in Newrest, Komani, with allegations that pupils and teachers are being affected by rain while the school awaits a long-promised rebuild.

Community member Bulelani Lwam Qowa said he visited the school on 29 July during rainy weather to assess the conditions at the site. The original school was demolished several years ago as part of an upgrade initiative.

Qowa alleged that pupils have insufficient covered space while waiting for transport, with some learners reportedly using a tree for shelter during rain. He also claimed that children who arrive before school and those waiting to be collected after school are left exposed because the available shelter cannot accommodate all learners.

He further alleged that rainwater enters some of the temporary classroom structures, affecting both teachers and pupils during lessons.

“Parents and the school are still in the dark,” Qowa said, calling for clarity on when the rebuilding of the school will be completed.

Komani News has requested comment from the Eastern Cape Department of Education on the status of the rebuild, reported leaks in temporary classrooms, and measures in place to protect learners from rain. The Department’s response will be added once received.
