Community talent
Karoo-born ‘Ice Breaker Art’ makes waves from the dusty streets of Nxuba (Cradock)
CRADOCK – In the heart of the Karoo, where the dust of the Eastern Cape meets a vibrant creative spirit, Likhona Skoti is carving out a name for himself. Known professionally as Ice Breaker Art, the Cradock-born visual artist is proving that world-class talent isn’t confined to the big city galleries of Cape Town or Joburg.
Skoti’s journey is a classic tale of local talent nurtured by community roots. His creative spark was first ignited during his primary school years at Kude Kwalapha, before finding more defined shape at Nxuba Secondary.
However, it was at J.A. Calata Senior Secondary School where his trajectory shifted from hobbyist to serious contender. Under the mentorship of Mr Sishuta, Skoti was encouraged to view his sketches not just as drawings, but as a calling.
From sketches to “dynamic” canvases
The evolution of Ice Breaker Art took a significant leap forward through a partnership with Luthando Ndabeni. Under Ndabeni’s guidance, Skoti transitioned from the precision of drawing into the rich, textured worlds of acrylic and oil painting.
The duo’s collaboration has become a cornerstone of the Nxuba creative scene. To date, Skoti’s portfolio boasts high-profile commissions for major entities, including:
-
ArtBanks
-
Lottoland
-
Various local community development projects
These milestones have solidified his reputation as a “versatile and disciplined professional” whose work remains deeply authentic to his Karoo heritage.
A unique blend of art and industry
What sets Skoti apart from many of his contemporaries is his multidisciplinary approach to his career. He doesn’t just rely on the brush; he has fortified his artistic practice with a suite of practical certifications that reflect a sharp business mind.
Skoti holds qualifications in Business Management, HR Management, Health and Safety, and even House Building. This “disciplined craftsmanship” allows him to lead large-scale projects with the same precision he applies to a canvas, ensuring that Ice Breaker Art is as much a sustainable business as it is a creative outlet.
As he continues to produce work that is described by peers as “bold and genuine,” Likhona Skoti remains a testament to the power of mentorship and the enduring inspiration found in the Eastern Cape landscape.
