DA calls for answers over Cradock school closures
The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape has called for urgent intervention following school closures in Cradock, including at Carinus Primary, saying the situation has raised serious concerns about safety and leadership in the provincial education system.
In a statement issued on 15 April 2026, DA MPL and Shadow MEC for Education Horatio Hendricks said the closures pointed to what the party described as a deepening crisis that could not be ignored.
Hendricks said when schools are forced to close because of safety concerns, it disrupts learning, creates uncertainty for families and educators, and places additional pressure on already vulnerable communities.
He said the DA would write to the MEC for Education to demand immediate intervention, a full report on the circumstances surrounding the closures, and urgent action against any official found to have neglected their responsibilities.
According to the DA, the closures have affected teaching time and raised anxiety among parents, learners and school staff.
The party said safe and functional schools are essential to protecting children’s right to education and ensuring teachers can work in proper conditions.
The DA further argued that the situation in Cradock reflects broader concerns about oversight, responsiveness and accountability within the Eastern Cape Department of Education.
Hendricks said urgent action was needed to restore safety, reopen affected schools and allow learning to continue without further disruption.
Komani News sent questions to the Eastern Cape Department of Education for comment. No response had been received at the time of publication.
If the department responds, their comment will be added.
