‘I Woke Up and the Door Was Open!’ Newvale Horror
Newvale Couple Robbed While Asleep as Crime Wave Worsens
A Newvale couple is living in fear after a shocking break-in where intruders allegedly entered their flat while they were asleep and stole a 3kg gas cylinder and chicken meat. The incident has intensified concerns among residents of Rubusana Street, who say crime in the neighbourhood has spiralled out of control.
According to the resident who spoke to Komani News, the break-in happened in the early hours of the morning while they were fast asleep.
The victim said they were unaware of anything happening during the night.
“I was sleeping and didn’t hear anything. They took the gas cylinder and the chicken meat. When I woke up, the door was wide open,” the resident explained.
The incident reportedly took place at around 2:30am. After discovering the theft, the resident went to a nearby flat, where a group of boys believed to be linked to local disturbances stay. The confrontation quickly turned hostile.
“When I went to their flat, they fought with me. They told me I should come with the police.”
Police were immediately contacted and arrived at the scene. Forensic officers were also brought in to dust for fingerprints.
The resident has opened a case at the Komani Police Station, and a case number has been registered.
They also confirmed that this is not an isolated incident.
“It’s happening to others too,” the resident told Komani News.
Police: Crime in the Area Is Rising
Komani police spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela confirmed the break-in, saying criminals managed to steal a 3kg gas cylinder and meat while the couple was asleep. The total value of the items stolen is estimated at more than R700.
“Police can confirm the housebreaking you are referring to,” Mgolodela said.
“Such incidents are currently rife within the area.”
Police warn that crime tends to increase during the festive season, mainly due to high alcohol consumption, drug abuse, and increased movement within communities.
Authorities issued safety reminders to residents, urging them to:
-
Keep all doors and windows locked
-
Activate alarm systems where available
-
Avoid leaving valuable items visible
-
Report suspicious movement immediately
The Mlungisi Community Policing Forum (CPF) is also active in the area, creating awareness about crime trends and patrolling hotspots. Meanwhile, the District Communication Office is running radio safety campaigns to advise communities throughout the festive season.
Community Frustration Growing
Residents in Newvale say they fear for their safety, especially at night. Many claim that criminals frequently move around the neighbourhood, targeting homes where people are fast asleep.
Some community members say they feel police visibility must increase, especially in streets that have become hotspots.
The resident who reported the break-in said they hope that by speaking out, more people will come forward and that authorities will take urgent action to address the ongoing crime wave.
Komani News has requested a follow-up update from the police and will continue to provide information as the case develops.
