Echoes of Nature: Tylden Farmer Showcases Eastern Cape Wildlife

A Queenstown District farmer is turning his lens toward the quiet beauty of the Eastern Cape countryside.

Ken Shuman, of Shuman Family Farms in Tylden, has unveiled a personal photography collection titled Echoes of Nature, capturing the diverse wildlife, landscapes and heritage features found on the family farm.

Situated in the rural surrounds of Tylden in the Eastern Cape, the farm offers a rich tapestry of natural scenery — from sweeping vistas and dramatic rock formations to antelope, reptiles and indigenous birdlife.

A Self-Taught Passion for Nature

Shuman describes himself as a self-taught photographer with a deep appreciation for the natural environment. Rather than relying on vehicles, he prefers exploring the farm on foot, binoculars in hand, listening closely to bird calls and observing animals in their natural habitat.

He identifies bird species by sound before sight, watching quietly as they move through the landscape. Animal tracks also form part of his interest, with antelope and wild buck hoofprints providing clues to wildlife activity across the terrain.

This hands-on approach allows him to immerse himself fully in the environment before capturing an image.

More Than Just a Photograph

According to Shuman, the process does not end once the shutter closes.

After taking each photograph, he researches the subject further — documenting facts, characteristics and background information about the animals, birds or geological features captured in the frame. This deeper exploration allows him to tell a fuller story behind every image.

Among the highlights of his collection are photographs of antelope species roaming the farm, reptiles basking in the Eastern Cape sun, rugged rock formations shaped by time, and ancient Bushman paintings that form part of the region’s cultural heritage.

These rock art sites add a historical dimension to the collection, connecting the present landscape to generations past.

The Echoes of Nature series offers viewers a window into life on a working farm in the Queenstown District — now known as Komani — and reflects the biodiversity that continues to thrive in the area.
