Clean Queenstown Crew Conquers Toughest Public Pool Cleanup Phase
Cleanup Team Completes ‘Most Disgusting’ Phase at Queenstown Rec Pool
A Major Milestone in the #CleanQueenstown Campaign
The Clean Queenstown initiative has closed off another demanding week with a major breakthrough: the completion of the third—and according to the team, the “most disgusting”—phase of their cleanup operation at the Queenstown Recreation swimming pool precinct.
This latest effort focused on restoring the ladies’ and gents’ change rooms, which had deteriorated into an extremely unhygienic environment after years of neglect. Volunteers reported encountering burnt litter, the remains of stray animals, and extensive human waste throughout both facilities. Despite the conditions, the team pushed through to bring the area one step closer to being safe, usable and dignified for residents again.
Tackling Severe Neglect
The Public pool area has long been a concern for local residents who still see the space as an important part of Komani’s social and recreational history. The facility has suffered ongoing decline, leading to safety issues, illegal dumping and vandalism.
Clean Queenstown’s recent phase was described internally as the most challenging due to the extent of contamination inside the changerooms. The group methodically removed rubble, scrubbed out the rooms, disinfected surfaces and cleared hazardous waste. Their work restored visibility to areas that had become nearly inaccessible due to filth and debris.
Community Support Strengthens Progress
According to the organisation, support from residents continues to grow, giving the team momentum to take on some of Komani’s toughest hotspots. Over the past week, volunteers, donors and community members have contributed time, resources and encouragement as the group pushes toward its goal of a cleaner, safer and more dignified Queenstown environment.
Yesterday’s completion of this phase is considered a “giant leap” toward reviving the broader facility and surrounding neighbourhoods. The team will now move into planning for their next targeted area, with efforts expected to continue into the new month.
A Shared Responsibility
The #CleanQueenstown movement highlights what can be achieved when citizens take collective responsibility for their public spaces. Their work aims to inspire wider participation, spark accountability conversations, and demonstrate that decay can be reversed through consistent, hands-on community action.
