Chris Hani District Municipality mourns slain MMC Thumeka Bikwana

The Chris Hani District Municipality says it has been left shocked and devastated following the killing of MMC for Corporate Services, Cllr Thumeka Bikwana.

According to a media statement issued by the municipality on Wednesday, Bikwana was allegedly murdered at her home in Tshatshu village in Cacadu on Monday night, 04 May 2026.

The municipality said her body was discovered with bullet wounds on Tuesday, 05 May 2026.

“The motive of the killing has not yet been established, and South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating the murder of the councillor,” the statement read.

Bikwana served in the district municipality for around two decades and held several leadership portfolios during her time in local government.

According to the municipality, she served as a member of the Mayoral Committee since 2006 under various departments including Budget and Treasury Services, Technical Services, Special Programmes Unit and Corporate Services.

At the time of her death, she was serving as the Portfolio Head for Corporate Services.

The municipality described her as a dedicated public servant who was respected for her integrity and leadership.

“Her transition into four different terms of council speaks volumes and it is consistent with her humble character and disciplined servant of the people,” the statement said.

The municipality added that the community had “lost a sound leader” who would be remembered for her ethical guidance in governance.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be communicated at a later stage.

The municipality also extended condolences to Bikwana’s family, friends and colleagues during what it described as a difficult time.

The South African Police Service investigation into the murder is ongoing.
