Child Protection Month Campaign to Close in Ezibeleni This Sunday
EZIBELENI – The national Child Protection Month campaign will conclude in Ezibeleni this weekend, with Acting Minister of Social Development Sindisiwe Chikunga expected to lead the closing event focused on protecting children and combating statutory rape.
The event, taking place under the theme “Working Together in Ending Violence Against Children”, is scheduled for Sunday, 7 June 2026, at Sinako Junior Primary School in Ezibeleni.
According to the Department of Social Development, the campaign aims to strengthen efforts to protect children from various forms of abuse, including cyberbullying, abduction, assault, child trafficking, sexual exploitation and statutory rape. The department said statutory rape remains a serious concern in South Africa and continues to threaten efforts to ensure children’s safety and wellbeing.
Focus on Child Protection
The department highlighted that, under South African law, any sexual activity involving a child under the age of 16 is illegal, regardless of consent. The campaign seeks to encourage greater awareness and strengthen responses to cases involving children.
Officials say the initiative relies on collaboration between government departments, civil society organisations, international development partners, community structures and families. Families are regarded as the first line of defence in nurturing, developing and protecting children.
Community Voices Expected
Residents of Ezibeleni and surrounding communities will have an opportunity to raise concerns affecting children and families during the event.
Issues expected to be discussed include gender-based violence, sexual exploitation, child neglect, child labour, substance abuse and teenage pregnancy. The department said these challenges continue to negatively affect children’s wellbeing and living conditions in many communities.
