Break-In at Nxuba Substation Causes Power Outages
Residents of Nxuba are advised that an early-morning break-in at the Cross Substation has caused power outages in several streets. The Municipality reported that electrical cables were stolen and high-voltage protection equipment was vandalised during the incident.
The affected areas include:
-
Hospital Street
-
Cawood Street
-
Cross Street
-
Culdene 1st and 2nd Avenue
According to the Municipality, this criminal activity has disrupted electricity supply and has the potential to affect critical services. Officials emphasised that vandalism and theft of electrical infrastructure not only interrupt service delivery but also create safety risks for residents and municipal workers.
Repairs are already underway, and the Municipality expects power to be restored later today. Technicians are working to replace stolen cables and repair damaged equipment to ensure that supply is restored as quickly and safely as possible.
The Municipality has strongly condemned the actions, describing them as irresponsible and harmful to the community. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, particularly around electrical infrastructure, and to report any suspicious activity to either the Municipality or the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Authorities also reminded the community that tampering with electricity infrastructure is a criminal offence and can have serious consequences, including arrest and prosecution.
The Municipality thanked residents for their patience and cooperation while emergency repairs are carried out and reassured the public that measures will be reviewed to strengthen security around critical electrical installations in the future.
Residents are encouraged to follow official updates from the Municipality regarding restoration timelines and safety advisories.
