KSD Mayor Recuses Himself as ANC Applies Step-Aside Rule
The African National Congress in the O.R. Tambo Region says it has implemented its Step-Aside Policy against the Executive Mayor of the King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality following his court appearance on charges linked to alleged fraud and corruption.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the ANC said the matter was discussed by the Regional Executive Committee officials and the Regional Working Committee, with consultations also taking place with the party’s national leadership.
According to the ANC, the mayor voluntarily submitted a written request to recuse himself from carrying out his duties as Executive Mayor while the legal process unfolds.
The party said it viewed the decision as a sign of respect for the organisation, the rule of law and public institutions, adding that the Step-Aside Policy would take immediate effect pending the outcome of the case.
The ANC stressed that the move should not be interpreted as a finding of guilt and reiterated that the mayor and other officials remain innocent until proven guilty in court.
The party further said it remains committed to ethical leadership, accountability and the fight against corruption, while assuring residents that service delivery in the municipality should continue without disruption.
The ANC said it would continue monitoring developments in consultation with national leadership and would decide on any further interventions if necessary.
