DA Raises Alarm Over Service Delivery Crisis in Hofmeyr
Residents in Hofmeyr have raised serious concerns about deteriorating municipal services, with the Democratic Alliance (DA) describing the situation as a deepening crisis affecting basic living conditions in the town.
This follows a visit by the DA Enoch Mgijima Constituency, where party representatives engaged directly with community members. According to the DA, discussions with residents highlighted ongoing challenges related to water supply, sanitation, and electricity.
Water shortages and infrastructure concerns
One of the most pressing issues raised during the visit was prolonged water shortages. Residents reportedly told DA representatives that some parts of Hofmeyr have gone without consistent water supply for extended periods, with claims that certain households have experienced little to no access for months at a time.
In other areas, residents indicated that water is only available for limited hours each day, placing strain on households and affecting daily life.
Sanitation infrastructure was also flagged as a major concern. According to the DA, residents alleged that sewerage systems are failing in parts of the town, with sewage reportedly flowing in streets. The party further claimed that this may be linked to infrastructure challenges, including pipe capacity issues.
Daily power disruptions
Electricity supply was another issue raised during the engagement. Residents told the DA that they experience frequent outages, sometimes on a daily basis. While the exact causes of these outages were not detailed, the situation has reportedly contributed to frustration among community members.
DA: “Beyond a crisis”
In its statement, the DA described the situation in Hofmeyr as having escalated beyond a basic service delivery issue, framing it as a matter affecting dignity and quality of life.
The party stated that the conditions raised by residents point to what it termed a breakdown in service delivery, and committed to continuing engagement on the matter.
Impact on residents
Access to reliable water, sanitation, and electricity remains critical for public health and economic activity. Prolonged disruptions can have serious consequences for households, businesses, and schools.
Residents in Hofmeyr have called for urgent intervention to address these challenges and restore consistent service delivery in the area.
