Man due in court after alleged axe murder in Libode
A 33-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the alleged murder of his 35-year-old girlfriend in Libode, in the OR Tambo District.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the suspect was arrested on Friday, 27 March 2026, at approximately 16:40, following a violent incident that reportedly took place a day earlier.
Incident unfolded at victim’s home
Police say the incident occurred at Gebane locality, Marhubeni A/A, in the early hours of Thursday, 26 March 2026, at around 05:30.
It is alleged that the suspect and the victim had a quarrel at the victim’s homestead. During the altercation, the victim’s 18-year-old daughter attempted to intervene but was reportedly chased away.
The suspect is then alleged to have fatally attacked the woman with an axe, leaving the weapon at the scene.
Arrest and court appearance
Police were summoned to the scene, and an investigation was launched, which led to the arrest of the suspect later that day.
The 33-year-old man is expected to appear before the Libode Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 30 March 2026, where he will face a charge of murder.
Police condemn violence
OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, has condemned the incident, describing it as a brutal act and a serious case of gender-based violence.
He also extended condolences to the victim’s family and friends, urging them to allow the justice process to take its course.

Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
