Mbhashe Local Municipality Strengthens Road Safety Measures
Dutywa, Eastern Cape – In a bid to improve road safety and ensure compliance with transport laws, the Mbhashe Local Municipality has stepped up its efforts with a two-day refresher training programme for officials on the National Land Transport Act and the National Road Transport Act.
The training, organised by the Municipality’s Community Services Department, brought together officials from multiple agencies, including the South African Police Service (SAPS), Provincial Traffic, Law Enforcement, and the Eastern Cape Department of Transport.
Participants spent two days reviewing legal frameworks, enforcement procedures, and strategies to enhance safety on roads throughout the municipality.
The programme concluded with a practical joint operation along the busy N2 highway in Dutywa, where officials applied the knowledge gained during the theory sessions.
The operation included inspections, monitoring of compliance with traffic laws, and guidance to drivers on safe driving practices.
Executive Mayor Dr Samkelo Janda attended the operation and highlighted the importance of collaboration among stakeholders. “I really appreciate the cooperation from the Department of Transport, SAPS, Traffic, and Law Enforcement.Your consistency in ensuring compliance with the law has helped stabilise the Mbhashe area. Keep up the good work,” said Dr Janda.
The municipality emphasised that road safety remains a priority and pledged to continue working closely with all relevant stakeholders.
These joint efforts are aimed at reducing road accidents, promoting law-abiding behaviour, and ensuring safer travel for all residents and road users in the area.
Through such initiatives, the Mbhashe Local Municipality hopes to create a more coordinated and effective approach to transport safety, combining training, enforcement, and community engagement to protect lives on its roads.
