Two years later, friends give back in his name

Residents in Komani are coming together this week to honour the memory of a young man by giving back to the community in a meaningful way.

March marks two years since the passing of Luthando Ntsika Lingela. In remembrance, his friends, led by Onwaba Lizalise Swaartbooi, have organised an outreach initiative aimed at assisting residents visiting the Phelophepha healthcare train, which is currently serving the area.

The group plans to provide meals throughout the week to people queuing for medical services, many of whom spend long hours — and sometimes overnight — waiting to be assisted. A tent will also be set up to offer shelter from the rain and provide a safer, more comfortable space for those waiting in line.

The Phelophepha train, a mobile healthcare facility, typically attracts large crowds as it offers much-needed medical services to communities with limited access to healthcare. Long queues and extended waiting times have been a common challenge for residents.

Swaartbooi has called on members of the public to support the initiative, either by volunteering their time or donating food to help ensure that those waiting are provided with wholesome meals.

“ If there is anyone who is available to come and give a hand, please liaise with me. If you have any food you can provide so that we can make sure the meals are wholesome, please do liaise with me,” she said.

The initiative highlights both the ongoing challenges faced by residents seeking healthcare services, as well as the spirit of ubuntu within the Komani community, as locals step up to support one another during difficult times.
