Nonesi Mall has officially launched its R76.1-million redevelopment, adding new shops, banking services and expanded retail space to the Komani shopping centre.

The launch was held on Thursday, 13 August, under the theme Sikhulile — meaning “We’ve grown” — with tenants, project partners, stakeholders and invited guests attending the event.

The redevelopment includes a 3,100 square metre expansion and is aimed at strengthening Nonesi Mall’s position as a one-stop shopping destination for Komani and surrounding areas.

The expansion has introduced OBC Better Butchery, FNB, Standard Bank, Absa, Hi-Fi Corp and PostNet to the centre.

The project also saw the relocation and refurbishment of Clicks and its pharmacy, the introduction of Edgars, and an expansion of the SideStep store.

According to Nonesi Mall, the redevelopment has created 356 employment opportunities to date, with 174 jobs going directly to local people.

About R39.7-million was spent on subcontractors and materials during the project. Of that amount, R12.5-million was spent within the local community, while R26.6-million was spent elsewhere in the Eastern Cape.

The mall said this meant that 98.5% of the project’s recorded expenditure remained within the province.

The official programme included a community legacy handover, cultural welcome, ribbon-cutting ceremony and a walkabout of the newly redeveloped spaces.

Nonesi Mall said the expansion forms part of its continued investment in providing shoppers with greater convenience, choice and access to essential retail and financial services.
