Police Seize Two Illegal Firearms in Mthatha Operation
MTHATHA – Police in the OR Tambo District have arrested a 42-year-old suspect and seized two unlicensed firearms and ammunition during an intelligence-driven operation in the Mampondomise area outside Mthatha.
The operation was conducted on the evening of 29 December 2025 by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) following information received about the illegal possession of firearms. Acting on the intelligence, police moved swiftly to the identified location where the suspect was found in possession of the weapons.
During the search, officers recovered two unlicensed firearms, along with ammunition. The suspect was immediately arrested and is expected to face charges related to the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
SAPS said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to remove illegal weapons from communities, particularly in areas affected by violent crime. Firearms in the wrong hands continue to pose a serious threat to public safety, with police emphasising that intelligence-led operations remain a key strategy in combating gun-related offences.
The arrest is also part of broader crime-prevention initiatives underway across the OR Tambo District, especially during the festive season, when incidents of violent crime traditionally increase.
Police have reiterated their call for community members to work with law enforcement by providing information that can assist in identifying and removing illegal firearms. Members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious activity anonymously through SAPS crime-reporting channels.
The suspect is expected to appear in court once formal charges have been processed.
