Three Stutterheim Families Receive Support Following Recent Crises
Amahlathi Municipality Steps In to Support Families After Tragic Incidents
Amahlathi Local Municipality has provided emergency relief to three vulnerable families following recent tragic incidents in different parts of the municipal area, highlighting ongoing efforts to support residents during times of crisis.
On the day of the intervention, Amahlathi Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Nomakosazana Nongqayi, together with officials from the Department of Social Development, visited affected households to deliver food parcels, blankets and mattresses as immediate relief. The support formed part of the municipality’s social relief programme aimed at assisting families facing sudden hardship.
Families Receive Immediate Assistance
The beneficiaries of the intervention included the Myoli family from Toise in Ward 5, who recently experienced a tragic incident that left the household in distress. Also assisted was the Mpetsheni family, a child-headed household facing ongoing socio-economic challenges, as well as Mr Zola Bazi from Mlungisi in Ward 14, who was affected by a reported disaster incident.
Municipal officials said the assistance was intended to provide short-term relief while longer-term support mechanisms are explored through relevant government departments and social services.
Mayor Emphasises Support and Justice
Addressing the families during the handover, Mayor Cllr Nomakosazana Nongqayi said the municipality remained committed to standing with residents during difficult times.
“We are here to support families in need by providing temporary relief and assistance. The Myoli family, in particular, needs strength during this difficult time, as these incidents happen unexpectedly. We hope that those responsible for criminal acts will be apprehended and brought to justice,” she said.
The mayor further emphasised that collaboration between local government and social development structures is essential to ensure vulnerable households receive timely and coordinated support.
Community and Government Working Together
The Department of Social Development confirmed that it would continue engaging with the affected families to assess additional needs, particularly in the case of the child-headed household, where long-term welfare interventions may be required.
The beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the support received, describing the intervention as timely and much needed under the circumstances. Community members also welcomed the municipality’s presence, noting that such visits help restore dignity and reassurance during periods of loss and uncertainty.
Amahlathi Local Municipality has reiterated its call for communities to work closely with local authorities by reporting incidents early, allowing for quicker response and assistance. The municipality said it will continue monitoring the situations of the assisted families and provide further support where possible.
