Police Hunt Underway After Eight Escape Maluti Holding Cells

A massive search operation is underway in the Eastern Cape after eight detainees escaped from Afsondering Police Station in Maluti on Saturday, 4 April 2026.

The escapees, identified as Asiphe Yawu, Abraham Gobozi, Kwanele Mzala, Siphelele Mkhulisi, Thabo Nana, Siphelele Nondolo, Anele Ludidi, and Sinethemba Mazendala, are considered to be dangerous criminals.

“Members of the public who may have information that could assist in the investigation or help locate the escapees are urged to come forward,” said Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, Eastern Cape police spokeswoman.

She said police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the escape and have opened a separate case of aiding and abetting to determine if anyone assisted the detainees.

“We caution the public not to apprehend the escapees themselves as they are considered dangerous,” added Gantana.

She said confidential tips can be shared with Sergeant Matabane on 076 342 4033, Constable Mantelefu on 073 109 7962, or via Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the MySAPS App.
