Municipality Aids Mlungisi Centres with Groceries on World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day: Enoch Mgijima Municipality Donates Groceries to Mlungisi Care Centres

In recognition of World AIDS Day, the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality has extended support to two longstanding community care centres in Mlungisi township, donating groceries to help sustain their daily feeding programmes for vulnerable children and elderly residents. The handover took place at the old Rowel Old Age Home premises, where both organisations currently operate.

The beneficiaries — Qiqa Uphile and Ukhamba Care Centre — provide daily meals and essential care to children, elderly people, and community members who include individuals living with HIV/AIDS and those receiving ongoing treatment. For many beneficiaries, these centres are the only consistent source of food, emotional support, and stability.

With the rising cost of living and persistent socio-economic challenges in Komani, the donation arrived at a critical time for both organisations.

Ongoing Support Amid Daily Challenges

According to the information shared, food shortages remain one of the biggest challenges facing the centres, which serve vulnerable residents who often have no other means of support. Ms Nandi Madikwa and Ms Nobuntu Kondlo, who help manage the centres, emphasised that grocery donations from the public and local businesses are urgently needed to keep the operations sustainable.

Both women continue to appeal to community members, churches, NGOs, and businesses to assist wherever possible. They highlighted that regular supplies of staples such as maize meal, rice, vegetables, cooking oil, and proteins allow the centres to maintain consistent daily meal services.

The municipality’s donation included non-perishable food items suitable for long-term meal planning. While not a long-term solution, the contribution forms part of the municipality’s ongoing relationship with the centres.

A History of Municipal Assistance

This is not the first time Enoch Mgijima Municipality has supported the two care centres. In previous outreach efforts, the municipality donated:

  • A stove for meal preparation

  • Seedlings for food gardening

  • Garden utensils

  • Eating utensils for the children

The community garden, established through earlier support, continues to produce vegetables used in the centres’ meal programmes. This garden has become a small but reliable source of fresh produce, helping reduce the cost pressures associated with feeding vulnerable groups daily.

The continuity of this garden demonstrates the value of sustainable support initiatives and their long-term impact within Mlungisi.

Serving Those Living With HIV/AIDS

World AIDS Day is an important annual event globally and in South Africa — a country with one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world. For communities such as Mlungisi, grassroots organisations play a vital role in reducing stigma, supporting treatment adherence, and providing safety nets for affected families.

Both Qiqa Uphile and Ukhamba Care Centre work directly with individuals living with HIV/AIDS, including:

  • Children orphaned or affected by HIV

  • Elderly caregivers

  • Community members on antiretroviral (ARV) treatment

  • Vulnerable households that require nutritional support while undergoing treatment

Their daily operations are essential in helping beneficiaries maintain treatment schedules, stay nourished, and access a supportive environment. World AIDS Day events like this bring visibility to the community-level work being done throughout the year.

Community Contribution Needed

While the municipality’s contribution is appreciated, the centres continue to rely heavily on public generosity. Ms Kondlo and Ms Madikwa urged individuals and organisations who wish to contribute to contact them directly.

Community members willing to help can reach them at:

  • Ms Nandi Madikwa: 079 343 7783

Any assistance — food parcels, toiletries, children’s clothing, blankets, school supplies, or financial support — would significantly strengthen the centres’ capacity as they work daily with vulnerable groups.

Local Impact and Social Responsibility

The situation in Mlungisi reflects broader realities across the Eastern Cape: high unemployment, food insecurity, and limited access to essential social services. Community-based centres like Qiqa Uphile and Ukhamba are often the first and only safety nets for at-risk families.

Municipal involvement is an important part of addressing these challenges, but long-term sustainability requires partnerships with community leaders, local businesses, and residents. As the centres operate from an old age home facility, they depend not only on food donations but also on structural support, equipment, and additional resources to provide safe, dignified care environments.

The municipality’s participation in World AIDS Day initiatives highlights the importance of awareness, compassion, and shared responsibility.

A Call for Continued Collaboration

As World AIDS Day reminds the nation of the need for unity in the fight against HIV/AIDS, the work being done in Mlungisi underscores how community resilience is strengthened when public and private sectors collaborate.

For the children and elderly people who depend on these centres, every donation — no matter how small — directly contributes to improved well-being and dignity. The centres remain committed to serving those most in need, but they cannot do so alone.
