Mthatha woman found with gun stolen in 2018 carjacking.
GUN COUPLE CAUGHT IN SLOVO PARK!
Mthatha – A man and a woman are behind bars after the community blew the whistle on a silver Toyota Corolla cruising the streets of Slovo Park with a deadly cargo.
The OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, has heaped praise on residents whose tip-off led Mthatha Crime Prevention members to the duo on Tuesday, 6 January.
When the police swooped in on the suspicious vehicle, the occupants didn’t stick around to chat. Four people scrambled out of the car and bolted in different directions. However, the long arm of the law was too quick for two of them.
A 19-year-old woman was cornered and found with a 9mm pistol tucked away. Upon checking the serial number, cops discovered the weapon was “hot”—it had been stolen during a carjacking in Carletonville back in October 2018.
Her 34-year-old male companion was also found carrying a 9mm pistol. While his gun hasn’t been linked to a specific crime yet, both weapons are being sent for ballistic testing to see if they have been used in any recent shootings or robberies.
Major General Modishana welcomed the arrests, noting that getting unlicensed firearms off the streets saves lives.
The pair is expected to face the music in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
