CLIFF-HANGING MADALA SAVED!

A 78-year-old madala’s fascination with nature almost cost him his life after he slipped and plunged down a dangerous cliff in QwaQwa this week.

Tumo Mahlangu, from Tebang Village in Makoane, found himself dangling between life and death on Monday, 12 January, while exploring the rugged heights of the Mabolela mountains. What was meant to be a peaceful walk to admire the scenery turned into a nightmare when he lost his footing and became trapped on a treacherous ledge.

The brave pensioner didn’t panic. At around 16:05, he used his cellphone to dial the Phuthaditjhaba Community Service Centre, sparking a massive overnight rescue operation.

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Fire Brigade, and paramedics rushed to the scene. Due to the difficult terrain, the SAPS Air Wing was called in on Tuesday morning to finish the job.

In a dramatic display of teamwork, the multidisciplinary team—including K9 members and EMS specialists—spotted the elderly man. He was successfully hoisted to safety by the police chopper.

Despite his terrifying ordeal, the madala is a survivor. He was classified as priority three, having sustained no fractures. After receiving on-site treatment, he was whisked away to Mofumahadi Manapo Mopeli Regional Hospital, where he is currently in a stable condition.

Tumo, a first-time mountain climber, admitted his love for the outdoors led him to the peak. “I am fascinated by natural landscapes and rivers,” he said.

Air Wing Commander, Colonel Moeketsi Phiri, praised the heroes who braved the heights to bring Tumo home. “I want to thank everyone who played a part in saving the life of Mr Mahlangu,” he said during a debriefing session.
