Career exhibition inspires Chris Hani learners to explore future careers

More than 300 learners from schools in Mlungisi and surrounding areas were given an opportunity to learn about career opportunities within the South African Police Service (SAPS) during a career exhibition hosted by the Chris Hani District Women’s Network Forum.

The event formed part of the SAPS “Bring a Boy and Girl Child to Work” initiative and was held at Maria Louw Senior Secondary School on 27 May 2026 under the Mlungisi policing precinct. Learners from Maria Louw Senior Secondary School, Nkwenkwezi Secondary School and KwaKomani Combined High School attended the exhibition.

Members of the Mlungisi Community Policing Forum (CPF) also attended the event.

According to the SAPS, Maria Louw Senior Secondary School acting principal Mr C. Vermaak welcomed guests and encouraged learners to take full advantage of the opportunity. He reportedly told learners that SAPS was not only present for law enforcement purposes but also to expose young people to future career opportunities within the police service.

Chris Hani District Women’s Network Champion Colonel M. Rangasamy-Bisumbar outlined the programme and explained that the initiative was aimed at introducing learners to various career paths available within SAPS. The forum also launched a joint career exhibition this year to ensure all learners could benefit equally from the programme.

During the exhibition, several specialised SAPS units showcased their work.

Captain T. Njikelana from the Explosives Unit explained the functions of the Bomb Disposal and Commercial divisions, while Warrant Officer M.M. Maqoko from the K9 Unit demonstrated how police dogs assist with suspect identification, self-preservation at crime scenes and other policing duties.

Representatives from the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) also engaged learners on forensic investigations and crime scene preservation, highlighting the importance of protecting evidence and avoiding contamination of crime scenes.

Constable L. Mlungwana introduced learners to the SAPS vision and mission through an interactive session and provided information about specialised units including Public Order Policing, Tactical Response Team (TRT), the Hawks, Mounted Unit and the Flying Squad. Learners also attended an outdoor display where police dogs demonstrated their ability to detect narcotics and apprehend suspects.

Junior District Commissioner Ms K. Sam addressed learners on the role SAPS plays in promoting safety and security. She also encouraged young people to partner with police in efforts to combat crime and highlighted the importance of gender equality within the organisation.

At the end of the programme, learner representatives from the three participating schools shared reflections on the day, speaking about the knowledge and career insights they had gained through the exhibition.

The event concluded with words of appreciation from the secretary of the Chris Hani District Women’s Network, who thanked all role players for contributing to the success of the exhibition.
