BREAKING: Five Arrested After ATM Cash Theft Raids in Komani
Five suspects linked to a series of alleged ATM cash theft incidents in parts of the Eastern Cape have been arrested following a coordinated police operation that stretched across several provinces.
The suspects, aged between 35 and 49, are expected to appear before the Prins Albert and Paarl Magistrates’ Courts after their arrest on Friday during an intelligence-driven operation involving multiple law enforcement units and private security companies.
ATMs Targeted Across Chris Hani District
According to Eastern Cape police, the arrests follow reports that several Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) had been tampered with and cash stolen at multiple locations in the Chris Hani District.
Police spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said information was received on 6 March indicating that about six ATMs had allegedly been targeted in Whittlesea, Cacadu, Steynburg and Komani (Queenstown).
Authorities believe the suspects may have been operating as an organised group.
“They were reportedly seen dressed in Fidelity security uniforms and carrying firearms while travelling in two Toyota Starlet vehicles with Gauteng registration plates,” police said.

Police requested permission to search the vehicle.
During the search, officers allegedly discovered:
-
Cash

Police said the occupants were unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for possessing the items.
The suspects were arrested on the spot and the items were seized as evidence. The vehicle believed to have been used in the commission of a crime was also confiscated.
Second Vehicle Intercepted in Paarl
The second suspect vehicle initially evaded police but continued travelling towards Cape Town.
It was later intercepted and stopped in Paarl, where two additional suspects were arrested.
Police reported that a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of:
-
Cash
-
Cellphones
-
Security uniforms
The vehicle was also seized as it is believed to have been used during the alleged crimes.
Suspects To Be Transported Back to Eastern Cape
Police confirmed that the suspects will first appear in court in the towns where they were arrested before being transferred back to the Eastern Cape.
They are expected to be transported as prisoners-in-transit to Komani, Whittlesea, Cacadu and Steynburg, where the ATM theft cases are being investigated.
At this stage, the suspects are facing charges related to possession of suspected stolen property, while investigations into the ATM theft allegations continue.
Cash, Vehicles and Firearms Seized
Authorities reported that several items believed to be linked to the alleged crimes were seized during the operation, including:
-
Large amounts of cash
-
Two vehicles
-
Two firearms
-
Security uniforms
The estimated value of the recovered items is believed to be around R1 million, according to operational reports.
Police Warn Criminal Syndicates
Chris Hani District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph welcomed the arrests and warned criminal groups targeting the region.
He said police remain committed to protecting communities from organised crime.
“These people know that Chris Hani District is a no-go area for criminals, yet they do not learn,” he said.
Investigations Continue
Police have indicated that investigations are ongoing and additional charges could be added depending on the outcome of the inquiry.
Authorities are also continuing to examine links between the suspects and the ATM incidents reported across several towns in the district.
