Walter Sisulu University hosts disability awareness campaign.
Walter Sisulu University recently held its “In My Shoes” campaign at the Mthatha Campus, with the initiative focusing on disability awareness, accessibility and inclusion within the university community.
The campaign was aimed at giving staff and students a greater understanding of the experiences of people with disabilities while promoting diversity and encouraging a more inclusive environment on campus.
Dr Zanele Nomatshila, Acting Manager for Equity and Diversity in the Disability Unit, said inclusion remained an important part of the university community.
Walter Sisulu University brings together students and staff from a range of backgrounds, including people with disabilities who contribute to the institution’s academic, cultural and social environment.
Nomatshila said the university’s history and traditions also provide an opportunity to consider how the institution continues developing its approach to accessibility and inclusion.
“As a historic institution, Walter Sisulu recognises that its buildings, traditions, and practices carry the story of its past. Some of these traditions are treasures worth preserving; others invite reflection and renewal. The university embraces this moment as an opportunity to build on its proud heritage by strengthening its commitment to accessibility, inclusion, and belonging for all members of its community”, she added.
Nomatshila also encouraged staff and students to make inclusion part of everyday university life and to better understand the experiences of others.
She said this could contribute towards a university community where people are more connected and understanding of one another.
The university community was further encouraged to ensure that all people, regardless of whether they have a disability, are valued, respected and treated equally.
