Residents welcome clean-up, ask why so many workers for one job

The Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality says it is continuing efforts to clean up Komani, with municipal workers on Monday clearing an illegal dumping site at the corner of Queens Drive and Griffiths Street.

The municipality said the team removed litter caused by illegal dumping and cleared soil that had built up along the curb to improve drainage and tidy the area.

While residents welcomed the clean-up, many believe much more needs to be done.

Illegal dumping remains a major problem across Komani. Many street corners, pavements and open spaces are littered with rubbish, with residents questioning why the municipality is not carrying out a larger clean-up campaign across the town.

Some residents have also questioned how municipal cleaning teams are deployed. In photos shared by the municipality, several workers can be seen at the site, while only a few appear to be carrying out the work at the moment the pictures were taken. Residents believe teams could perhaps be used more effectively to clean more areas across Komani.

The municipality has not indicated whether similar clean-up operations will be rolled out to other parts of the town.

Komani News requested comment from the municipality. No response had been received at the time of publication.
