Enoch Mgijima Municipality Marks Mandela Day With Community Outreach

Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality joined communities across South Africa on Saturday in commemorating Nelson Mandela Day by dedicating 67 minutes to serving residents through various community outreach initiatives.

The municipality said the annual campaign honours the 67 years that former President Nelson Mandela devoted to the fight for freedom, equality and justice.

Executive Mayor Cllr Madoda Papiyana participated in Mandela Day activities in New Town, where he was joined by members of the Mayoral Committee and ward councillors in giving back to the local community.

The municipality’s Mandela Day programme also extended beyond Komani. In Tarkastad, the Special Programmes Unit visited elderly residents, sharing messages of hope, compassion and unity.

Meanwhile, the Human Settlements Department spent time at the Unako Special Day Care Centre, where officials engaged with beneficiaries as part of the municipality’s 67 Minutes initiative.

According to the municipality, the activities reflected Mandela’s legacy of selfless service and highlighted the importance of supporting vulnerable members of society through meaningful acts of kindness.

Mandela Day is observed annually on 18 July, encouraging individuals, organisations and communities to spend at least 67 minutes making a positive difference in the lives of others.
