EMLM Reaches Out to Ethiopian Business Community in Komani
Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality has held its first formal engagement with representatives of the Ethiopian Community, with both parties expressing a commitment to strengthening relations, supporting economic growth, and promoting social cohesion.
The meeting took place on 25 May 2026 and was led by Executive Mayor Cllr Madoda Papiyana. According to the municipality, the purpose of the engagement was for representatives of the Ethiopian Community to formally introduce themselves and establish a working relationship with the municipality and government structures.
The Ethiopian Community, described as a body representing Ethiopian nationals living legally in South Africa, indicated that it wants to work with the municipality to help improve the local economy and contribute to job creation.
During the meeting, Mayor Papiyana welcomed the engagement and reaffirmed the municipality’s support for lawful business activity.
“This Municipality is willing to work with all businesses as long as this is conducted legally. We have the responsibility to create a conducive environment for business to thrive. We must be united in fighting crime and building our towns. We acknowledge the role of Ethiopian nationals and all other business people in creating jobs for our brothers and sisters. A few weeks ago we removed containers due to illegal business practices, not because of their nationality. As this Government we will never promote hatred in our communities. As long as we exist here, we will always denounce extortion and hatred that is based on nationality. This Municipality is now focusing on improving basic service delivery to ensure business continuity.”
The municipality said the meeting forms part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between local government and business communities operating within the municipal area.
According to the statement, discussions focused on building healthy working relations, supporting economic development, and creating an environment where businesses can operate legally and contribute to local growth.
The municipality further reaffirmed its commitment to improving service delivery, supporting economic growth, and promoting unity among residents and business owners across the municipality.
