EFF Criticises ANC Over Chris Hani Mayor Lusanda Sizani Case

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Eastern Cape has criticised the African National Congress (ANC) for what it describes as a failure to act against Chris Hani District Municipality Executive Mayor Councillor Lusanda Sizani, following a court matter relating to the alleged loss of a firearm.

In a statement issued on Friday, the EFF said the matter relates to findings by the ANC’s Provincial Integrity Commission which, according to the party, recommended that Sizani step aside from leadership positions pending the finalisation of the case.

EFF Raises Concerns Over Leadership Accountability

According to the EFF, Sizani has been charged in court in connection with the alleged unlawful loss of a firearm.

The party claims the case relates to a 9mm pistol that was reportedly left in a bag inside a vehicle while Sizani was checking out of a hotel. The vehicle was later allegedly found unlocked and the bag containing the firearm was missing.

The matter was subsequently reported to police and the case has reportedly been before the courts since April 2025.

The EFF said the ANC’s Integrity Commission recommended that Sizani step aside from any leadership position pending the finalisation of the case, in line with the governing party’s rules regarding members appearing in court on serious charges.

Political Pressure Mounts

Despite this recommendation, the EFF said Sizani continues to serve as Executive Mayor of the Chris Hani District Municipality.

The party argued that this situation raises concerns about accountability and leadership standards within the ANC.

The EFF also said the issue highlights what it described as a contradiction between the ANC’s public commitment to ethical leadership and how disciplinary matters involving its leaders are handled.

Public Safety Concerns Raised

The EFF further stated that the alleged negligent handling of a firearm should be treated as a serious issue given South Africa’s high levels of violent crime.

According to the party, leaders entrusted with public office should demonstrate responsibility and respect for the law.

The EFF said it will continue monitoring the matter and holding the ANC accountable both inside and outside government structures.
