Popcorn Valley Residents Raise Concerns Over Unfinished Pavement Works

Residents of Popcorn Valley in Komani have raised concerns about the quality and completion of municipal pavement works after contractors reportedly moved on to new projects while sections of the area remain unfinished.

One resident from Bonnievale Street told Komani News that pavement work outside their home has not been completed to a satisfactory standard, despite construction activity continuing further up the road. The resident said they are unhappy with the workmanship and are uncertain whether the project in their area has been formally signed off by the municipality.

“I’m not happy with their work and I don’t know if Popcorn Valley has even been signed off yet,” the resident said in messages sent to Komani News. The resident requested guidance on what steps could be taken to address the situation.

According to the resident, attempts were made to draw the attention of municipal officials when a bus carrying inspectors and councillors reportedly passed the house without stopping, despite the resident standing outside at the time.

“The municipality just drove past the house. We called them but they didn’t even bother to stop. All the inspectors and councillors were in the bus,” the resident said.

The property in question is located at 15 Bonnievale Street. Photographs and a video of the paving were later provided to Komani News, showing areas where pavement work appears incomplete.

The resident also reported that construction workers arrived at the site for the first time shortly after the matter was escalated, although it was unclear whether they were sent by the municipality.

When asked whether this was the first visit by contractors since the complaint was raised, the resident confirmed that it was.

Komani News has formally requested comment from the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality regarding the concerns. Questions sent to municipal spokesperson Lonwabo Kowa include whether pavement works in Popcorn Valley and Bonnievale Street have been completed and signed off, what recourse residents have if they are dissatisfied with workmanship, and the expected timeline for completing outstanding work in the area.

At the time of publication, no response had been received from the municipality.

Community members say the situation has left residents frustrated, particularly as construction appears to be progressing elsewhere while existing work remains unfinished. Some residents have expressed concern that poor-quality or incomplete paving could deteriorate further if not addressed promptly.
