Fire Warning
Extreme Veld Fire Danger Warning Issued for Komani and Chris Hani District
Residents across Komani (Queenstown) and large parts of the Chris Hani District Municipality have been urged to exercise extreme caution after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Veld Fire Warning indicating extremely high fire danger conditions for the area.
According to the official SAWS alert, Fire Danger Index (FDI) levels are expected to exceed 75, a threshold that signals conditions favourable for rapidly spreading and uncontrollable veld fires.
The warning is valid from 09:00 to 21:59 on Tuesday, 06 January 2026.
Areas Affected in the Chris Hani District
The warning specifically includes Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, which covers:
-
Komani (Queenstown)
-
Molteno
-
Tarkastad
Other municipalities within the broader warning area include Intsika Yethu, Inxuba Yethemba, Emalahleni and Sakhisizwe, among others across the Eastern Cape interior.
Why the Risk Is Extremely High
SAWS has attributed the heightened fire danger to a combination of dry conditions, strong winds, and very hot to extremely hot temperatures expected across the region.
In its discussion, SAWS warned that these conditions are conducive to runaway fire behaviour, meaning that:
-
Fires can ignite easily
-
Flames can spread rapidly
-
Fires may become difficult to control once started
These conditions significantly increase the risk to rural settlements, farms, grazing land, and nearby towns, including areas surrounding Komani.
Potential Impacts
The weather service has warned that the possible impacts of veld fires under these conditions include:
-
Damage to property
-
Loss of grazing land
-
Threats to livestock
-
Possible loss of human and/or animal life
Residents living near open veld, farms, or informal settlements on the outskirts of towns are considered particularly vulnerable.
Public Urged Not to Start Fires
SAWS has issued a clear instruction to the public:
-
Do not start any fires under these conditions
-
Avoid open flames, burning of rubbish, or controlled burns
-
Use extreme caution with braais, cigarettes, and machinery that may cause sparks
The weather service further advises that at the first sign of smoke, every possible measure should be taken to contain the fire immediately and alert relevant emergency services.
Local Context: Komani and Surrounding Areas
Komani and surrounding rural areas have experienced veld fires in previous summer seasons, often fuelled by dry grass, strong winds, and high daytime temperatures.
With temperatures expected to remain high across the interior of the Eastern Cape, residents are reminded that even small fires can quickly become dangerous under these conditions.
What Residents Should Do
Residents are encouraged to:
-
Clear dry grass and debris around homes where possible
-
Keep water, hoses, or fire extinguishers accessible
-
Report any signs of smoke or fire immediately
-
Follow updates from SAWS and local authorities
Komani News will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates should conditions change or further warnings be issued.
Residents are urged to take this warning seriously and act responsibly to protect lives, property, and the environment.
