Komani Records High Drunken Driving Arrests During Festive Season

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has reported that the province continues to see a high number of motorists arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during the festive season, with the Komani area emerging among the highest, although exact figures for the town are not yet available.

From 1 to 23 December 2025, a total of 752 motorists were arrested across the province for drunken driving. Between 24 and 28 December, an additional 275 arrests were recorded, bringing the total for the 28-day period to 1,027 arrests, averaging 36 arrests per day.

High-profile arrests highlight zero tolerance

Over the past weekend, several high-profile arrests occurred in Lusikisiki, within the O.R. Tambo District. Among those arrested were two SAPS officials attached to SAPS Lusikisiki, and two Public Prosecutors based in Butterworth and Mount Frere.

The Department emphasised that these arrests show that no one is above the law, and that enforcement applies to all road users, regardless of position or status.

Komani among areas with high arrests

According to Eastern Cape Traffic Communications spokesperson Unathi Bhinquose, Komani is among the areas recording high numbers of drunken driving arrests during the festive season, although exact figures for the town are not yet available. This places Komani alongside other districts such as O.R. Tambo, Amathole, and Alfred Nzo, which recorded the highest confirmed arrests during this period:

• O.R. Tambo District – 88 arrests

• Amathole District – 86 arrests

• Alfred Nzo District – 54 arrests

Bhinquose described the figures from Komani as concerning, noting that responsible driving is essential to prevent accidents and save lives.

Increased enforcement ahead of New Year

With major festivities planned across the Eastern Cape, the Department assured residents that traffic officers will be deployed fully, implementing a zero-tolerance approach to drunken driving. Roadblocks, patrols, and compliance operations will be intensified throughout the province, including in Komani.

Officials emphasised that every arrest contributes directly to saving lives, noting that road fatalities over the Christmas weekend decreased sharply compared to 2024.

Road safety remains a priority

The Department reminded all motorists, particularly in Komani, to act responsibly, obey traffic laws, and not drive under the influence of alcohol. Residents are encouraged to plan ahead by using designated drivers, public transport, or other alternatives, and to report reckless driving when observed.

As New Year celebrations approach, authorities urge all road users in Komani and the Eastern Cape to prioritise safety and support ongoing efforts to reduce preventable road deaths.
