Hail Blankets parts of Komani in Rare +-10cm Layer After Fast Storm

Hailstorm Covers Komani in 10cm Blanket of Ice During Sudden Evening Downpour

Komani residents witnessed a dramatic weather event this evening when a massive hailstorm struck at around 18:30, hammering the town for almost ten minutes and leaving certain areas covered in a thick, icy layer estimated at around 10 centimetres deep.

The storm moved in quickly, beginning with strong winds and dark cloud build-up before releasing an intense burst of hail that transformed roads, pavements and yards into solid white sheets within minutes.

While severe storms are not uncommon during the Eastern Cape’s summer season, the depth of ice recorded this evening is unusually high for Komani.

Ten Minutes of Intense Icefall

Residents in several neighbourhoods reported that the hailstones fell fast and heavily, quickly piling up against walls, vehicles, and household entrances. Many described the sound of the hail as “extremely loud”, with visibility dropping sharply during the peak of the storm.

Despite the volume of ice, the storm remained short-lived, ending within roughly ten minutes and leaving widespread patches of frozen terrain behind.

No Major Damage Reported Yet

As of publication, no official reports of damage have been received. There have been no confirmed injuries, accidents, or infrastructure failures linked to the storm.

However, Komani News encourages residents to remain cautious, as hail accumulation can make roads slippery and hazardous. Meltwater may also increase risks for pedestrians and vehicles in the hours that follow.

Motorists are advised to drive slowly, keep headlights on, and avoid areas where water or ice has pooled. Households should check for any possible leaks or blockages caused by the rapidly melting hail.

A Reminder of Seasonal Weather Risks

The Eastern Cape’s summer period is known for sudden thunderstorms, short but violent downpours, and unpredictable weather patterns. Today’s hailstorm serves as yet another reminder for residents to monitor weather alerts, especially during late afternoons when temperature shifts can produce rapid storm development.

Authorities are expected to continue monitoring conditions into the evening, though no further severe weather has been indicated at this stage.
