The community of Msholozi C in White River is in deep mourning following the tragic drowning of a two-year-old boy.

Little Sibusiso Mnisi lost his life yesterday, 13 January, after he was swept away by a powerful current in a stream near his home.

According to his devastated mother, Ms Thapiseng Mnisi, the toddler had been fast asleep inside the house when she stepped out to cross the nearby stream. However, unbeknown to her, the little boy woke up and followed his mother out of the house.

It is alleged that the brave but tiny boy tried to navigate the crossing on his own. Tragically, the heavy rains had turned the stream into a death trap, and the strong current proved too much for the child.

Emergency services and all relevant stakeholders rushed to the scene, but there was nothing they could do. Paramedics officially certified the little boy dead at the scene.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has sent his deepest condolences to the Mnisi family during this dark time.

He issued a stern warning to all residents to stay alert as the wet weather continues to lash the province.

“Community members must exercise extreme caution. Our streams, rivers, and dams are overflowing and pose a serious danger to everyone, especially our children,” Mkhwanazi said.
