Suspected Cash-In-Transit Heist Attempt Foiled on R61 Near Cofimvaba

A suspected cash-in-transit heist attempt was thwarted on the R61 between Cofimvaba and Komani on Tuesday morning after a cash vehicle managed to escape an apparent attack.

According to police spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, it is alleged that a Fidelity cash vehicle was deliberately bumped by a black Mercedes-Benz sedan in an apparent attempt to force it off the road between Qamata and Cofimvaba.

“The Fidelity Cash Vehicle was bumped by a black Mercedes Benz sedan trying to derail it between Qamata and Cofimvaba along the R61. Unfortunately it could not succeed as the cash vehicle managed to speed off,” said Mgolodela.

The suspects reportedly abandoned their plan after failing to stop the cash vehicle.

Police later discovered the Mercedes-Benz abandoned and engulfed in flames near the Outhay Junction along the R61. No occupants were found at the scene.

Investigators are currently working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and to trace those responsible for the attempted heist.

Cash-in-transit robberies remain a serious concern across South Africa, with criminals often using high-powered vehicles and aggressive tactics in attempts to stop security vehicles transporting money.

No injuries have been reported at this stage and the investigation is continuing.
