Alleged Death Threats and Digital Harassment Follow Earlier Attempted Murder Report

STERKSTROOM – A woman and her child living on a farm in the Sterkstroom area are reportedly living in fear after the individual they previously reported to police for attempted murder allegedly escalated the abuse. According to the victim, the suspect is now issuing death threats, posting private images online, and harassing her family.

The woman, who spoke to the Komani News, said the situation has worsened since she first reported an attempt on her life and that of her child to the police.

“I reported the suspect for attempting to kill both me and my child. After this, the police were unable to locate him, and I was sent home,” she said.

The victim claims that the alleged perpetrator has continued the harassment via phone and digital platforms. She alleges that the suspect has posted private images of her body online, verbally abused her family, and directly threatened her life.

She described her current state as one of extreme fear and vulnerability.

“I am terrified and feel completely unsafe. Living here on the farm, I don’t feel protected, and I currently have no way to communicate quickly in an emergency,” she explained.

The victim confirmed that she has a case number from her initial report to the police, but she does not have access to it at this time. She said the uncertainty around the suspect’s whereabouts and the lack of immediate police action has heightened her sense of insecurity.

Rural Challenges and Broader Concerns

The alleged threats highlight the growing concern around Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and digital harassment in rural communities. Experts note that victims in remote areas often face unique challenges, including delayed police response, limited access to emergency services, and social isolation, which can exacerbate the sense of danger.

Community members say that incidents like this often create fear beyond the immediate victims, affecting neighbours and other families in the area. Local leaders are calling for more proactive engagement by law enforcement to ensure that vulnerable residents are protected and that alleged perpetrators are swiftly investigated and, if necessary, arrested.

Mandate for Action

The reported threats and alleged digital harassment place the woman and her child in immediate danger. Advocacy groups stress the importance of rapid intervention to protect victims and ensure that all cases of GBV are taken seriously. Prompt police action is crucial not only to safeguard the victims but also to prevent potential escalation of violence.
