Woman Assaulted After Tavern Argument in Ezibeleni
A young woman was assaulted following an argument at a tavern in Ezibeleni township, Komani, an incident that has drawn strong community reaction.
According to SAPS, the incident occurred after a disagreement between the complainant and another woman while they were socialising at a local tavern.
Police spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said the argument related to dissatisfaction over service delivery and escalated into a physical altercation.
“According to police information, the complainant and the suspect were together at a tavern in Ezibeleni when an argument ensued regarding dissatisfaction with service delivery during the tenure of the ANC,” Mgolodela said.
“The argument ended in a physical confrontation. The victim reportedly fled to her home, and the suspect followed her and continued assaulting her.”
Mgolodela confirmed that a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm was opened at the Ezibeleni Police Station.
“The suspect was arrested and appeared in court,” she said.
The accused appeared before the Ezibeleni Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was released on R500 bail. The case was postponed to 5 March 2026 for further investigation.
During the court appearance, members of the community attended in support of the complainant. Supporters of the accused were also present.
Some community members have raised concerns and called for further investigation into the incident. Police have not confirmed any additional suspects at this stage.
SAPS said investigations are ongoing.
