Ready for anything: SANDF prepares for G20 summit duty
PRETORIA — With the highly anticipated G20 Summit approaching, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), through its South African Military Health Service (SAMHS), has ramped up its preparations to ensure a state of full medical readiness. The focus is clear — to deliver fast, effective and professional medical support during one of the most important international events hosted by the country.
Advanced Life Support training underway
Frontline medical personnel from SAMHS are taking part in a specialised Advanced Life Support (ALS) workshop. The hands-on sessions are designed to enhance the ability of pre-hospital clinicians to respond to a wide range of medical emergencies.
The comprehensive programme includes modules on basic and advanced life support, acute coronary syndromes, and stroke management. Each segment focuses on up-to-date clinical protocols and emergency procedures, ensuring that the medical teams can make critical decisions under intense pressure.
“This kind of training is vital for both confidence and competence when dealing with high-stakes medical scenarios,” said an officer involved in the programme.
Communication training ensures total coordination
Beyond the clinical drills, Signal Personnel have joined forces with the medical teams to provide crucial instruction on radio communication protocols. Their role is to make sure that emergency teams remain connected and coordinated during the summit, ensuring that communication breakdowns do not hinder the speed or quality of care.
By combining clinical expertise with advanced communication systems, SAMHS is building a responsive and well-coordinated medical support structure capable of operating under summit-level security and logistical demands.
Ensuring readiness for a global event
The training reflects the SANDF’s broader mission to maintain a state of operational readiness for both national and international assignments. With the G20 Summit expected to bring together world leaders, delegates, and media from across the globe, the role of the Military Health Service will be crucial in upholding safety and medical standards.
This proactive preparation underscores the SANDF’s capacity to support major events with precision, professionalism, and dedication — ensuring that every possible emergency scenario is covered.
