N6 Partially Reopened After Truck Hits Bridge Near Rouxville and Aliwal North

Traffic on the N6 between Rouxville and Aliwal North has been partially restored following a serious early-morning incident involving a truck and a bridge structure.

The collision occurred at approximately 01:45 on Thursday near a bridge on the Free State side of the N6, when a truck travelling from Rouxville towards Aliwal North struck the bridge structure. The impact initially resulted in a complete closure of the road in both directions.

One Lane Now Open

As of 08:42, provincial traffic authorities have confirmed that one lane has been reopened to traffic. However, motorists are warned that significant delays are still expected, as traffic flow is being managed and movement through the area remains slow.

Traffic officials are continuing to monitor the situation on site while assessments of the bridge structure and surrounding roadway continue.

Delays Expected

Although limited access has been restored, traffic congestion is anticipated, particularly during peak holiday travel periods. Motorists travelling along the N6 are advised to remain patient and follow instructions from traffic officers on duty.

Alternative Routes Still Recommended

Drivers who wish to avoid delays may still consider alternative routes:

• From Rouxville:
  Travel via Zastron and Sterkspruit on the R26, then continue on the R726, linking via the R392 or R58 to reach Aliwal North, a journey of approximately 180 kilometres.

• From Goedemoed:
  Use the R71 via Bethulie, then the R48, crossing the Orange River and passing near Gariep Dam, covering an estimated 110 to 120 kilometres.
