Mayor Condemns Violent Crime in Mbhekeni, Conveys Condolences After Deadly R61 Crash
The Mayor of Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality, Cllr Siyabulela Zangqa, has conveyed condolences to bereaved families following two tragic incidents in the Ngcobo area — a violent crime in Mbhekeni and a fatal multi-vehicle road crash along the R61.
Mayor Visits Mbhekeni Family After Fatal Shooting
On Tuesday, 31 December 2025, Mayor Zangqa visited the family of the late Mr Luxolo Yoko at Mbhekeni in Ward 6 to express support and sympathy following his death on 28 December 2025. The visit followed a tragic incident that has deeply affected the family and the broader Ngcobo community.
It is alleged that an altercation during a traditional ceremony escalated, resulting in Mr Yoko being fatally shot. The Mayor noted with serious concern reports that the deceased was subjected to severe mutilation, highlighting the extreme brutality of the crime. The incident also left the deceased’s mother injured.
Strong Condemnation of Violence
Mayor Zangqa unequivocally condemned the incident, describing it as a senseless act of violence that has no place in society.
“Such acts of extreme violence are wholly unacceptable and stand in direct contradiction to the values of human dignity, respect for life, and community harmony,” the Mayor said.
He emphasised the need for communities to work together to prevent violence and uphold the values that promote peace and respect for life.
Arrest Made as Mayor Welcomes Police Response
The Mayor welcomed the swift response by law enforcement agencies, which led to the arrest of a suspect in connection with the incident. He reiterated the importance of the justice system acting decisively and without delay.
Mayor Zangqa also commended members of the community for their responsible actions in alerting authorities and assisting in ensuring that the suspect was apprehended, noting that cooperation between residents and police remains critical in addressing violent crime.
Nine Killed in Tragic R61 Road Crash
In addition to the Mbhekeni incident, the Mayor expressed deep condolences to the families of nine people who lost their lives in a tragic multi-vehicle accident on the R61 at Beyele, between Ngcobo and Cofimvaba, on the morning of 31 December 2025.
The crash occurred during the busy festive travel period, a time when road traffic volumes are significantly higher across the Eastern Cape.
Call for Road Safety and Responsible Driving
Mayor Zangqa extended well wishes for a speedy recovery to the eight people who sustained injuries in the crash. He urged all road users to exercise extreme caution, obey traffic regulations, and drive responsibly to prevent further loss of life on the province’s roads.
Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality said it continues to offer support to affected families while working with relevant authorities during this difficult period.
