Horror N8 Crash Claims Ten Lives Near Bloemfontein

A devastating collision on the N8 between Botshabelo and Bloemfontein has claimed ten lives, leaving dozens more injured and prompting a large-scale emergency response. The crash, which occurred on Saturday morning approximately 5 km before Mandela View, involved a bus and a truck and resulted in catastrophic damage to both vehicles.

According to emergency services, 41 people were affected in the crash, marking one of the most serious road incidents reported in the Free State this year.

Multiple Casualties and Widespread Injuries

Emergency personnel from across the region — including paramedics, fire and rescue teams, and law enforcement — rushed to the scene as reports of multiple entrapments and severe injuries surfaced.

Responders confirmed the following:

• 10 people sustained fatal injuries and were declared deceased on scene.

• 6 individuals suffered severe and critical injuries, requiring urgent treatment before being stabilised and transported to the Pelonomi Trauma Unit.

• 5 patients with moderate injuries were taken to Botshabelo Hospital and Busamed.

• 19 people sustained minor injuries and were transported to Botshabelo Hospital.

• 1 patient declined transport after being assessed by medical personnel.

The collision site was described as chaotic, with several passengers trapped inside the bus. Rescue teams used hydraulic tools to free those who could not escape on their own.

Rainy Weather and Dangerous Conditions

The crash occurred amid rainy and wet weather conditions, which responders say may have contributed to the severity of the incident. The N8 is known for heavy traffic between Botshabelo and Bloemfontein, particularly during early morning hours, making visibility and braking distance critical factors.

The area, which runs past the RRR farming region, reportedly had slick road surfaces at the time of the crash.

The lanes leading into Bloemfontein have been fully closed, causing major delays for motorists. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the route if possible and to follow instructions from officials directing traffic.

Motorists approaching the N8 were warned of long backlogs and the presence of multiple emergency vehicles still conducting operations.
