KZN COGTA Sends Disaster Teams to Newcastle After Devastating Storm and Flooding

Newcastle reels after severe storm leaves streets underwater

Ulundi-  KwaZulu-Natal’s Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) MEC, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has urgently dispatched Disaster Management teams to Newcastle following a violent storm that caused severe flooding in parts of the town on Sunday afternoon.

Flooding and Road Closures in the CBD

The Newcastle Central Business District (CBD) experienced heavy flooding after torrential rain swept through the area, leaving several roads submerged and infrastructure damaged. Disaster Management teams are currently on the ground assisting residents and coordinating safety operations.

Among the affected routes are:

• Ayliff Street

• Kirkland Street

• Scott & Bird Street

• Patterson & Allen Street

• Allen Street (near KFC) – where paving was reportedly lifted off due to the force of the water.

Authorities have implemented road closures in affected areas to protect motorists and pedestrians, urging the public to avoid flooded zones until further notice.

MEC Urges Caution and Cooperation

MEC Reverend Buthelezi appealed to residents to exercise extreme caution and follow all instructions from emergency personnel as teams continue to assess the situation and assist those affected.

“We are closely monitoring developments on the ground, and our teams are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of Newcastle residents,” Buthelezi said.

More Rain Expected for KwaZulu-Natal

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has forecast further inclement weather for KwaZulu-Natal on Monday and Tuesday, warning of possible heavy rains across multiple districts. Officials fear the incoming weather system could worsen flooding in Newcastle and pose risks to other low-lying areas across the province.

In preparation, Disaster Management teams province-wide remain on high alert, with rapid-response units ready to assist wherever needed.
