EFF candidates target rubbish problem in Enkululekweni

EFF councillor candidates in Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality took their election campaign to the streets on Thursday — with brooms and gloves — cleaning a long-standing illegal dumpsite in Enkululekweni, Mlungisi.

The site, residents say, has been causing a stench and health hazard for years.

Ward 16 councillor candidate Mnyamezeli Masoka said the area had been neglected and left drowning in rubbish.

“This area has been neglected and drowning in rubbish,” Masoka said. “We decided to clean the area so that the community can use the place by making a garden or anything that will assist the area.”

He said the clean-up was part of the EFF’s campaign to assist communities where the municipality has failed to deliver services.

The party’s candidates have been intensifying door-to-door campaigns ahead of the upcoming local government elections, with service delivery — particularly refuse collection, water and roads — emerging as a key grievance in Mlungisi and surrounding areas.

Enkululekweni is one of several areas in Komani that have been grappling with illegal dumping amid inconsistent municipal refuse collection.
