Chris Hani District leadership meets to unblock service delivery challenges

Chris Hani District reviews service delivery progress, water projects near completion

Leadership meeting targets water interruptions, sewer spillages and stalled projects

The Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) has confirmed that it is currently reviewing service delivery progress across the district, with a strong focus on resolving persistent challenges such as water interruptions, sewer spillages, vandalism and infrastructure theft.

The update follows an executive session led by CHDM Executive Mayor, Cllr Lusanda Sizani, attended by Members of the Mayoral Committee, the Municipal Manager, the Chief Executive Officer of the Chris Hani Development Agency, and senior departmental heads.

According to the municipality, the sitting is aimed at taking stock of performance across all key service delivery areas, identifying blockages that delay implementation, and ensuring that projects are completed and handed over to communities as planned.

Focus on unblocking service delivery challenges

Municipal officials confirmed that the session is addressing long-standing service delivery constraints affecting several communities within the district. These include recurring water supply interruptions, sewer spillages that pose health and environmental risks, as well as ongoing challenges linked to vandalism and theft of municipal infrastructure.

The municipality said these issues continue to undermine reliable service delivery and place additional strain on already limited resources, making coordinated intervention essential.

By bringing together political leadership and senior management, the municipality aims to accelerate decision-making and improve accountability across departments.

Fifteen water projects nearing handover

A key outcome of the meeting is preparation for the handover of approximately 15 water supply projects currently at various stages of completion across the district.

CHDM said the projects are expected to significantly improve access to water services once officially handed over, particularly in areas that have experienced prolonged supply challenges.

While no specific timelines were announced during the update, officials indicated that readiness assessments are underway to ensure that completed infrastructure can be operated and maintained effectively before being transferred for public use.

Community engagement highlighted as critical

In his opening remarks, Executive Mayor Sizani stressed the importance of sustained community engagement as a foundation for effective service delivery.

He highlighted initiatives such as Water Tuesdays, Integrated Development Plan (IDP) engagements, project handovers, and revenue management campaigns as vital platforms for interaction between the municipality and residents.

“These programmes remain critical in ensuring that communities are informed, heard, and involved in municipal processes,” Sizani said, according to the municipality’s statement.

Economic development also under review

The session also examined the role of Local Economic Development (LED) within the district, with specific attention given to the operations of the Chris Hani Development Agency.

Mayor Sizani emphasised that economic growth remains central to improving living conditions and service sustainability in the district.

He noted that the Development Agency carries a mandate to help change the economic outlook of the region and that its performance and impact require close oversight.
