KOMANI – The Eastern Cape Department of Health, in partnership with the Al-Imdaad Foundation, is conducting a cataract surgery drive at Frontier Regional Hospital’s Sabona Eye Centre in Komani.

The initiative, which is underway on Friday, 16 October 2026, aims to perform approximately 65 cataract surgeries by Sunday, 18 October, as part of efforts to reduce the surgical backlog and restore sight to eligible patients.

Cataracts cause clouding of the eye’s natural lens, resulting in blurred vision and, in severe cases, significant vision loss. Surgery can help restore sight and improve patients’ ability to carry out everyday activities.

The programme aims to improve the quality of life of patients awaiting treatment while addressing the demand for specialised eye care services.

Through the partnership, the Department of Health and the Al-Imdaad Foundation are working to strengthen access to essential eye care, particularly for underserved communities.

The initiative is expected to conclude on Sunday, with approximately 65 procedures targeted over the course of the programme.
