According to the Legislature, the week-long initiative forms part of its constitutional obligation to facilitate public involvement in its processes.

“The week-long initiative seeks to consider petitions submitted by members of the public and facilitate direct engagement between petitioners and affected stakeholders,” the committee said in a statement issued on 14 September.

“This engagement also aims to strengthen public participation and accountability, while enhancing oversight of government departments and municipalities.”

The committee said petitions remain an important mechanism through which communities can bring their concerns directly to the attention of the Legislature for intervention, oversight and resolution.
